Wall Street resilient as oil prices sink

U.S. stocks were mixed overnight as investors grappled with a dramatic drop-off in oil prices and more worrisome leads from faltering Asian stock markets.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average picked up 0.3% to 16398 points while the S&P 500 rose marginally to 1294 points.

The NASDAQ however stretched its losing streak to eight days declining another 0.1% to 4638 points.

Overall energy stocks were down more than 2% as the price of oil tumbled 6% under the US$32 a barrel mark.

The Australian dollar was steady at US$0.70.
