Oman- Top international sailors for Musannah Race Week

Some of the world's top sailing stars are set to descend upon the Musannah Sports City for the 2016 Musannah Race Week (MRW) which for the first time will feature the Laser Radial and the Laser 4.7 classes.

The MRW will take place from January 17-20 with a prize giving ceremony scheduled for January 23.

Around 160 athletes including women's Optimist world champion Jodie Lai from Singapore and her compatriot and last year's winner Daniel Ian Toh will use the opportunity to make the most of the favourable sailing conditions combined with some advanced coaching sessions. A

leadership and personality development session on the first day to be conducted by Oman Sail will kick off a busy round of action for sailors with the aim of sharing knowledge and tips for the less experienced young participants.

Among them who represent 21 countries are 51 Omanis all selected from Oman Sail's youth programme. Sailors from UAE Bahrain and Kuwait will also attend the event.

They will get a one-off opportunity to fast track their racing careers by closely following established sailors who also include the top-ranked girl in Europe Ariadne Spanaki of Greece and North American champion Mia Nicolosi of the US.

Mohsin al Busaidi who heads Oman Sail's youth programme said "The MRW is starting to feature on more and more racing schedules for youth coaches all over the world because it represents an opportunity for good competitive racing in great conditions at a world-class venue.

'We started the MRW in 2011 and have worked hard to make it one of the top world-class contests for youngsters in the GCC.'

Welcoming the introduction of two new classes this time round Busaidi said "We welcome the Laser Radial and Laser 4.7 sailors although a few might have already raced here before since Musannah's reputation as a top venue capable of hosting some of the sport's signature events is growing faster than we could ever have imagined. We are lucky enough to have an international fleet of Lasers here."
