Al Jubeir Jordanian counterpart discuss regional issues
(MENAFN- Arab News) RIYADH: A range of bilateral regional and international issues including Iran and Syria were discussed by Foreign Minister Adel Al-Jubeir and Jordan's Deputy Prime Minister & Foreign Minister Nasser Judeh here Saturday. "It was primarily a consultation meeting between the foreign ministers of the Kingdom and Jordan" said an Arab diplomat who was aware of the talks.
"The meeting primarily focused on the latest regional developments following Iranian attacks on Saudi embassy recently" said the diplomat. In fact Jordan is one of several Saudi allies which summoned the Iranian ambassador in Amman and strongly condemned the recent attacks on the Saudi embassy. Amman has also urged Iran to respect laws and judicial rulings of the Kingdom.
Judeh himself has voiced strong condemnation of the embassy attacks and also expressed Jordan's rejection of Iran's interference in Arab affairs and the domestic affairs of Saudi Arabia. The meeting between Al-Jubeir and Judeh also touched many other subjects like Yemen. The two ministers discussed "regional and international issues of mutual concern" said an SPA report published Saturday.
The talks between Saudi and Jordanian foreign ministers is significant keeping in view Arab League foreign ministers meeting scheduled to take place on Sunday. The ministerial meeting was attended by Khalid Al-Jandan undersecretary for bilateral affairs at the ministry of foreign affairs Osama Nugali ministry's spokesman; and Azzam Bin Abdulkareem Al-Gain undersecretary for protocol affairs.
Politically Jordan has very close ties with the Kingdom. It is a natural ally of the GCC countries which are striving to ensure comprehensive peace in the region and curb the menage of terrorism. In fact Jordan has been equally impacted and concerned over issues affecting the peace and security of the Arab world. One of them that requires urgent attention is the out flux of Syrian refugees.
According to reports thousands of refugees are stranded in what's become a 'no man's land' along Jordan's northern border with Syria. This is on top of the fact that Jordan is currently hosting an additional 633000 of the 4.39 million Syrians registered as refugees with the UN. The talks between Al-Jubeir and Judeh came three days after the conclusion of the joint Saudi-Jordanian Economic Committee meeting held in Amman.
On commercial front Riyadh and Amman have forged closer ties. Saudi Arabia ranks as Jordan's top trading partner with two-way trade exceeding $5.3 billion annually. The Kingdom is one of the top investors in Jordan with total investments totaling $10 billion in different fields like infrastructure transport tourism energy finance construction and many more.
