Roving library reaches impoverished in rural Lebanese regions

BEIRUT Jan 9 (KUNA) -- Educating the children and enriching their knowledge constitute the basis for their sound upbringing so they may become a generation aware of modern era's requirements and capable of playing a role in nations' development.
Despite great development of information technology a main attraction for the children the books remain a basic tool for educating the youngsters thus libraries particularly those that provided non-electronic services remain an indispensable sanctuary for children to read them.
In Lebanon Sabeel society which has supported public libraries since 2008 seeks to promote reading with mobile libraries reaching rural regions far from the cities where there are many libraries.
Sari Moussa an activist in the association told KUNA the mobile library is actually a school bus that has been transformed into a library that travels to the villages and towns of the country.
Tens of thousands of children have benefited from the project borrowing books or getting engaged in cultural activities that are provided during the bus tours. The team manning the bus organizes special courses show plays and train children on writing short stories in addition to holding seminars to encourage children of diverse faiths and beliefs to intermingle and interact for sake of boosting diversity tolerance among citizens.
In addition to the Lebanese thousands of Syrian refugee kids have also benefited from the roving educational service since flare-up of the Syrian crisis in 2011. Syrian refugees are settled at many regions the Lebanese rural areas where cultural and entertainment facilities are almost non-existent.
Jumana Awadah an official at the philanthropic Development Services Center in the southern city Sidon said the center cooperates with Al-Sabeel society for promoting education and culture and encouraging the young to read.
The roving library reaches the center regularly where dozens of Lebanese and Syrian children get together for reading and holding cultural dialogue about contents of some read books.
The children she said are fascinated by the idea of having books loaded into the bus contrary to the conventional definition of libraries.
The roving library includes a variety of books including short stories and diverse scientific and educational subjects. (end) wsm.rk
