Qatar- QRCS to begin projects at Gaza public hospitals

DOHA: Qatar Red Crescent Society (QRCS) has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Palestine’s Ministry of Health to implement new medical projects at several public hospitals in Gaza.

The 12-month project at a cost of $800000 (QR2909740) aims to provide quality health services to patients.

The MoU was signed by Saleh bin Ali Al Mohannadi QRCS Secretary-General and Dr Ashraf Abo Mahadi Director-General for International Operation at the ministry.

The QRCS office in Gaza will establish a new joint replacement unit in the Al Shefaa medical Complex at a cost of $600000. It involves medical staff training and remuneration delegation of an orthopaedic consultant procurement of general and specialist surgical equipment and supply of joint replacement prostheses for one year.

The project will help improve the advanced orthopaedic surgical services in the complex minimise the need for patient referrals abroad reduce the rate of permanent disabilities resulting from orthopaedic injuries and receive hundreds of patients and elderly every year.

The project also aims to enhance gastroscopy services by procuring a gastroscope colonoscope and duodenoscope for Nasser Hospital and medical consumables for gastroscopy for Nasser Hospital and European Gaza Hospital. These provisions will cost $200000 benefiting about 15000 patients with gastrointestinal problems a year who visit surgical and internal medicine departments of both hospitals and nearby health facilities.

Indirect beneficiaries include 100 medical interns of the hospital and 60 Palestinian Board internal medicine doctors and surgeons.

The ministry will assess the needs determine specifications and estimated costs make quantity lists invite and award tenders develop training plans and select the training provider and trainees in coordination with QRCS.

The ministry will also secure licensing from authorities and facilitate the work of QRCS and follow-up committees. Al Mohannadi said “The endeavour is in response to the urgent needs of public hospitals to introduce and improve surgical and diagnostic services enhance performance and reduce patient referrals abroad.” He stressed the importance of supporting Gaza hospitals which are inadequately equipped and staffed. “The projects are in line with the Health Sector Strategic Goals 2013-2017 adopted by Palestinian healthcare care providers and decisionmakers.”
