The country will honour its fallen heroes with 'Martyr's Medal' the Federal National Council (FNC) said on Tuesday.

Families of Emirati soldiers who lost their lives protecting the nation and its allies will receive the medals for their son's heroic sacrifices.

To introduce the posthumous award for the national heroes the FNC members agreed on amending the 1987 Civil Decorations Law at a council meeting held in the FNC Headquarters in the capital.

The amendment will thus include the 'Martyr's Medal' and follows a decision made by the President His Highness Shaikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan.

The law will now also include an added section that details the honouring of the fallen soldiers.

The amendment will therefore not only honour and commemorate the sacrifices of those who lost their lives during the Saudi Arabian-led intervention Operation Restoring Hope in Yemen which began in March 2015 but will also be a reminder to the martyrs' families of their sons' heroic duties.

Salem Ahmed Ali Al Shehhi FNC member from RAK said: "This is the right thing to do and it is critically important because honouring the martyrs with medals will give strength to their families." Naema Abdullah Al Sharhan another FNC member from RAK highlighted on the notion that the medals will encourage future generations to also help protect the nation.

"The medals are meant to honour the martyrs acknowledge them as role models who sacrificed themselves for the nation" Al Sharhan said.

"Awarding medals to martyrs will help inspire youths and lead them to follow their legacy to defend sovereignty and independence and protect national and cultural gains of the homeland" she added.

Apart from the Martyr's Medal the FNC members also discussed a draft law which involves honouring diplomats and those who provided immense services to UAE by awarding them with medals and decorations.

Al Shehhi said: "The law seeks to acknowledge the efforts of those who have contributed to developing the UAE's foreign relations."

The UAE government is doing all it can to honour commemorate and show appreciation to the soldiers.

In August 2015 following the death of three Emirati soldiers in Yemen the President declared November 30 as the annual commemoration day for those who lost their lives.
