The Department of Communicable Disease Surveillance and Control in the Ministry of Health (MoH) has made it mandatory for children to be certified fit by a doctor before they are administered vaccines.

'The rule was always there but the ministry has made it compulsory from this year' an official with MoH said. Paramedic staff at the Ruwi Health Centre recently refused to vaccinate an 18-month-old child as his parents didn't have a fitness certificate.

'They administered the vaccines only after we got a fitness certificate from a doctor at a private clinic' the mother of the child said. A paramedic staff at the Ruwi centre said 'Earlier parents complained that their children developed fever and other problems following vaccination.

'The ministry has now made it mandatory that every child needs to be declared fit by a private doctor in case of an expatriate and by a government doctor for Omanis.'

Speaking to Muscat Daily Dr Rajiv Kabad paediatrician Badr al Samaa Hospital Ruwi said 'As per the ministry's rule we have started certifying that whether a child is medically fit for vaccination on the due date.'
