The Office of the Crown Prince of Dubai (CPD) has launched a special initiative to encourage employees to read in response to the initiative 'Year of Reading 2016' launched by the President His Highness Shaikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan.

The new initiative of the CPD aims to strengthen the general and specialised competencies of the staff. Through the initiative employees will get the right to read at work for three hours a week.

With this the CPD has gained the honour of becoming the first government and national entity to adopt and implement Shaikh Khalifa's initiative. Saif bin Markhan Ketbi Director-General of the CPD said: "Reading is the key element of civilisation ...

3 HOURS READING ... ONE BOOK A MONTH

Abdullah Mohammed Al Habtoor director of human resources and administration at the CPD revealed the logic of letting employees read for three hours a week. On an average a person can read up to 30 pages an hour which means that three hours a week is sufficient to complete reading one book every month.

"The book exhibitions in Abu Dhabi and Sharjah and the declaration of Sharjah as the capital of Islamic culture in 2014 all enhance the future vision of the UAE that represents the National Agenda 2021.

"Everyone is aware of how difficult it is to read in the age of social media - everyone wants quick information they have no time for serious reading. So we launched the initiative to integrate it with the Ideas Management System launched recently at the office and we recognise that this is an investment not a waste of time as some might think."

Abdullah Mohammed Al Habtoor director of human resources and administration said the move is aimed to promote leadership and instil the spirit of perseverance among employees. It is expected to stimulate creativity which will increase knowledge and experience.

Al Habtoor said the three hours per week will help employees complete at least one book a month. He said the CPD will provide all facilities needed for the employees to read.
