Europe must admit terrorism internal problem- Italian PM

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) ROME Dec 29 (KUNA) -- Italian Prime Minister Matteo Renzi Tuesday urged the European countries to acknowledge that terrorism was a problem that existed in Europe too which required counter-terrorism measures including via education."Italy has a new position inside the EU to stop considering terrorism a problem that only originates from the Middle East because it exists here too" Renzi said at his end-of-year news conference.He said the people who carried out terrorist acts in Europe "are Europeans who were born and live" in Europe.Renzi refused the claim that the youth joining of terror groups and thus carrying out suicide attacks stemmed from economic conditions.He called for confronting this reality by "investing in culture and education" as well as security while addressing sideline communities in Europe which were a lucrative environment for terrorists."We have to have the courage to admit of educational and cultural" problems among the youth who should be blended within schools and safe cultural surroundings said Renzi.He said Italy has been playing a bigger role on the international scene citing participation in a recent meeting in Vienna Austria over the Syrian conflict while Rome hosted an international conference on Libya.Renzi who met with Libyan Prime Minister-designate Fayez Al-Sarraj yesterday said Itlay has been playing a greater role in Libya alongside European countries and the US.On Turkey He hoped accession negotiations between Ankara and the EU would resume in coming weeks but affirmed that freedom of press in Turkey should be addressed.Renzi criticized the European far-right parties' attack against refugees coming to Europe. He said Italy was Europe's most stable country thanks to the new election law coupled with legislative and constitutional reforms which included the scrapping of the Senate. (end) mn.bs
