Oman- Bahrain's Anwar Makki lifts OGC Table Tennis title

Bahraini paddlers dominated the Oman Gas Company (OGC) Open Table Tennis Championship that concluded at the Sultan Qaboos Sports Complex (SQSC) on Monday.

In an exciting all-Bahraini title clash Anwar Makki got the better of Mohammed Abbas 3-2 to claim the trophy and a cash award of RO1000.

Organised by the Oman Table Tennis Committee (OTTC) the event attracted a total of 72 players from Oman Bahrain Kuwait Lebanon India Pakistan and the Philippines. Runner-up Abbas received RO750 while Oman's Sultan al Riyami who finished third was handed a cash award of RO500. Riyami proved too strong for his rival Ali Salman of Bahrain in the third-place playoff match winning 3-0. Salman received a consolation award.

Abdulaziz al Mujaibi the acting CEO of OGC was the chief guest and gave away the awards in the presence of Abdullah Bamakhalef the OTTC chairman and other sports officials.

Speaking after the event Bamakhalef said "We are pleased with the success of the tournament that saw participation from international as well as local players. This is the first time that OGC has come on board to support our open tournament. We thank the Ministry of Sports Affairs and all our partners for the tournament's success.

'Our next aim is to host an international championship where we plan to invite world-class players. It would cost us a lot to organise it but we are keen to involve corporate houses and the government to make it possible in future' he said.

'The visit of top-class players to Oman may also help showcase the tourism potential to the world.'

The tournament also witnessed the participation of Omani women officials as referees and judges officiating the matches.
