EU reaffirms respect for Jerusalem s sacred sites

JEDDAH 29th December 2015 (WAM) -- The European Union has re-affirmed the importance of respecting sacred sites in Jerusalem. This came in a letter from Federica Mogherini High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy sent to the Secretary-General of the Organisation of Islamic CooperationOIC Iyad Ameen Madani.

Mogherini said that any change in the status quo of the religious sanctities policy will have serious effects on stability in the Middle East. The EU believes that the parties' commitment to the provisions of international humanitarian law and international laws including accountability will help achieving stability and peace in the region.

Mogherini renewed the EU's support for the efforts aimed at reaching a fair and comprehensive solution to the Palestinian-Israeli conflict based on the two-state vision for establishing an independent sovereign democratic and viable state of Palestine with territorial continuity.

The High Representative of the European Union letter was in response to a recent message from Madani calling for international stance against repeated Israeli violations of the sanctity of Al-Aqsa Mosque.
