Msheireb metro station to be among the world's biggest

(MENAFN- Gulf Times) One of the world's biggest metro stations is rapidly taking shape at Msheireb, where three different lines will have an interchange point and football fans will pass through as they transit between stadiums in 2022.

The station will be completed by mid-2018.

Progress at the site is clearly visible with different levels of work being undertaken by around 2,000 construction workers on site.

Situated on the Doha Metro network, the station will be one of the 37 completed in the first phase as Qatar Rail provides a seamless transportation experience to the fans attending the 2022 FIFA World Cup.

Msheireb will be the main interchange station and will be completed as part of the three Doha Metro lines - Red, Green and Gold - delivered in the first phase of the landmark nationwide infrastructure project.

Situated at one end of the Gold line, Msheireb station connects passengers to all the proposed stadiums linked by metro sites.

Rapid progress is being made in the construction of the station, as Dr Markus Demmler, senior director QIRP at Qatar Rail, said on a recent visit to the site by the Supreme Committee for Delivery & Legacy (SC).

"This is one of the biggest metro stations under construction anywhere in the world. The civil design stage is complete and we are now making rapid progress in the civil construction phase. Our top priority is always site safety as we continue to advance with the construction," Demmler told www.sc.qa.

"Six Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) breakthroughs have already been made out of a total of 12 scheduled for the station. Concrete work is progressing and civil work is scheduled for completion towards the later part of 2017 and the station will be completed by mid-2018," he added.

Qatar Rail has completed 60 % of the 113 km of tunneling on the Doha Metro, using 21 tunnel boring machines, in the endeavour to provide 600,000 passenger trips a day by 2021 when both phases € Doha Metro and Lusail Tram networks € become operational.

Phase one involving Doha Metro network will commence operations in 2019 and will cover a distance of 80 km of which 63 km will run underground.

The Lusail Tram network will add a further 38 km in phase 1 and will be completed in 2019.

For football fans, Msheireb station will be an important interchange point as it connects fans who may well be going from one match to the next given Qatar's unique compact hosting concept.
