A first-of-its-kind gala dinner was held on Monday to raise funds for six charity associations/NGOs.

The event was held under the patronage of H H Sayyid Kamil bin Fahad al Said at Al Bustan Palace a Ritz-Carlton Hotel as part of the 45th National Day celebrations.

Participants included the Association of Early Intervention for Children with Disability (AEICD) Association for the Welfare of Handicapped Children Omani Society for Hearing Impaired Oman Autism Society Al Noor Association for the Blind and Dar al Atta'a.

Sabah Mohammed al Bahlani CEO of AEICD said 'The event was organised to create awareness about the associations and their work. We feel that there is a big change in Oman as people are getting aware about disabilities and they have started bringing their children to us but there is much more to be done.

'We still have to overcome various challenges. For instance children face hurdles at public places like parks where facilities for them are limited.'

The organisers felt the country needs updated data on people with disabilities which would enable the charities to perform better.

Sabah added 'There should be a joint effort by all parties to build a favourable environment for people with disabilities. What people need to understand is that every person with disability has abilities too. One should not look at the disabilities alone but focus on their abilities. We can help them integrate into the community by focusing on their abilities.'

Barka Shahbal al Bakry representative for the International Association for Volunteer Effort in Oman said 'Efficiency of the disabled at workplaces is affected by the way other employees treat them. Hence it is important to train staff on how to deal with them so their morale is not affected.

'Also donors should get involved with the functioning of any organisation. I feel that associations must publish details about their expenses in media so that supporters know the money has been spent in the right way.'

Tanu Bheda director Armour Insurance Services and founding member of the event's organising committee said 'We would like various associations to join hands which will enable them to cut costs and integrate activities in the best possible manner. For instance the services of a therapist can be shared among organisations.'

The organisers said that they would like 'more volunteers to come forward to assist the cause'. In collaboration with the Oman Society for Fine Arts 45 selected paintings sculptures and works of art featuring artists of different nationalities were auctioned. Proceeds from the event and auction will be distributed equally among the six participating charities.

Tickets for the event were priced at RO50 per seat.

Around 500 people including local dignitaries VIPs and members of the business community were in attendance
