Review: Ford Mustang GT

Say what you like about muscle cars - 'they're just for posers' 'they're not actually that fast' - they undoubtedly provide the most bang for your buck. Relatively inexpensive good looking and throwing out a noise that could wake up the dead owning one is the adult equivalent of (depending on your age) having the flashiest own-brand Walkman or iPod in the playground. Okay so it may not be a Sony or Apple but it gets the job done at a fraction of the cost and everyone is going to want to borrow it.

Over here muscle cars enjoy particular popularity a) because petrol is cheap and b) because the roads are large and straight enough to enjoy them to their full potential. While the tested Mustang GT may not be quite suited to the winding country lanes of Henley-on-Thames not to mention the gas prices there at over Dhs6 per litre rendering you bankrupt trying to keep its thirsty five-litre V8 satiated in Dubai it's perfect.

The 2015 model's new styling has rightly gained many plaudits. A meaner front end and more sculpted pneumatic body is quite something if you're into in-your-face looks. Like Amber Rose or Channing Tatum you can't help but take notice if they or it were to roll into view. And like the aforementioned celebs the GT is not shy when shouting about its credentials. Stick your foot down and the 421 horsepower engine actually roars. It creates a sound like no other. Even when sat at the traffic lights the gurgling is enough to put a smile on your face.

Whether it gets all the power it possesses down on the road sufficiently the jury is still out but the GT is no slouch. The rear-wheel drive makes journies a thrill ride especially in the U-turns where a little keenness on the accelerator will have the back out. Not to worry though the excellent steering will instantly correct this and you'll feel - as this car is supposed to make you feel - like a Duke of Hazzard.

Inside it's not too different from previous incarnations. The brushed aluminum features chunky instruments and low driver's position are all welcome and part and parcel of the Mustang experience. It was felt there was even a bit more room in the back seats but if you're in the mood for one of these you won't care about that very much.

Perhaps one of the most enjoyable aspects of driving a Ford these days is the onboard technology that comes as standard. Again this is not normally part of the Mustang conversation but is becoming increasingly important for many. The most useful components include an excellent navigation system and a warning light which flashes up telling you the car ahead is slowing. Top marks when tail gaiting here is so common and is a problem that needs to be addressed.
