Arab League condemns Turkish intervention in Iraq


(MENAFN- Jordan News Agency) Cairo Jan. 25 (Petra) -- The Arab League Council has condemned a recent Turkish military deployment in northern Iraq as an 'assault on Iraq's sovereignty".

During an emergency meeting held upon Iraq's request the Arab League accused Turkey of violating international law and urged the Turkish government to withdraw its troops from the Arab country immediately.

"The Turkish incursion into Iraq constitutes a glaring infringement of rules of international law and breaches Iraq's sovereignty" the Arab League Secretary General Nabil Elaraby said.

Meanwhile The Arab foreign ministers also condemned Iran's interference in the internal affairs of Arab states calling it a threat to regional and international peace and security and as a violation of the international law and the principles of good-neighbourly relations.

The top Arab diplomats urged Iran to stop using force threats violations provocative actions to sow the seeds of division and sectarian strife among the nationals of the Arab states.

They also demanded Iran to stop supporting terrorism and sabotage and provoking violence through statements by its senior officials.

Further the Arab League condemned the abduction of Qatari hunters last week in southern Iraq. The council expressed solidarity and support to the Qatari government in its efforts to secure the release of its nationals.
