Giri Carlsen share lead at Qatar Masters Open


(MENAFN- The Peninsula) Action from the Qatar Masters Open Chess championship at Aspire Zone in Doha yesterday. The ten-day championship ends on December 29.

Doha: World No.2 Anish Giri of Netherlands drew his fourth round match with Li Chao B of China to share the Qatar Masters Open Chess tournament lead with four others.

Yesterday at the Aspire Zone the 21-year-old Dutch who had a perfect score after three rounds had to share a point with his Chinese opponent.

Keeping company with Giri at the top were Wesley So of USA Magnus Carlsen of Norway Maxim Matlakov of Russia and Chao.

Reigning world champion and world No.1 Carlsen who drew his first round match with Nino Batsiashvili of Gergoria has since recovered to win next three matches. Carlsen heads a list of 77 Grandmaster’s taking part in the ten-day championship. It is for the first time since 1971 that a reigning world champion is competing in an open event since Boris Spassky at Vancouver.
