(MENAFN- Morocco World News) Morocco ranks 20th in a study conducted among the most militarized countries in the world.
The study was published by the Bonn International Center for Conversion (BICC) a German research institute in Bonn Germany under the direction of researchers Jan Grebe and Max M. Mutschler. The study was funded by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) according to the BICC. The report studied 152 countries based on data from the International Research Institute for Peace in Stockholm (SIPRI) the International Monetary Fund (IMF) the World Health Organization (WHO) and the Bonn International Center for Conversion (BICC). Researchers took into account the population military expenditure of each country around the world in comparison to their Gross Domestic Product (GDP). This year Morocco rose 9 ranks from its 2014 ranking of 29. Morocco ranks in between Lebanon in 19th place and Finland in 21st. In Africa Algeria is the most militarized country in 14th place followed by Morocco. Egypt ranks 26th and Angola in 31st. The number one spot went to Israel followed by Singapore and Armenia. Overall the Middle East remains the region with the highest rate of militarization. According to the report out of the top 10 countries with the highest GMI in 2015 three are in the Middle East (Israel Jordan Kuwait). Last week a delegation from Saudi Arabia (which ranked 17th) signed an agreement on military and technical cooperation between the Moroccan Royal Armed Forces and the Saudi Armed Forces. Morocco will reportedly benefit from the agreement by becoming a producer of weapons earning an important role in the International Defense Industry. 'No less than 220 billion dirhams will be invested by the Kingdom over a period of four years (2015-2019) to strengthen the deterrent capabilities of the Royal Armed Forces' the Strategic Defense Intelligence Institute (SDI) revealed.
