DOHA: A conference on Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) which is an annual affair was held here yesterday and on its sidelines awards were given away to local companies and institutions that excelled in CSR.

This was the third consecutive year of the conference which was held at the Ritz-Carlton by Dar Al Sharq publishers of The Peninsula and Al Sharq newspapers.

The event was held under the patronage of H E Sheikh Abdullah bin Saoud Al Thani Governor of Qatar Central Bank and Chairman of the Sport and Social Contribution Fund (Da’am).

It was attended by Abdul Latif Al Mahmoud Dar Al Sharq CEO and Jaber Al Harami Editor-in-Chief of Al Sharq and Deputy of CEO in addition to 300 participants from the public and private sectors including several businessmen ambassadors and many CSR experts.

The conference witnessed distribution of CSR awards and launch of the third edition of the White Book which was published for the first time in 2013 and comprises 350 pages.

The book contains valuable topics on international efforts made in recent years to urge companies to comply with the principles and ethics related to work environment and CSR.

It also contains reports prepared by companies government institutions and volunteer organisations shedding light on their efforts to enhance social responsibility.

The White Book has become an annual feature and includes reports and CSR content.

Jaber Al Harami said at the conference: “The year 2013 witnessed the publication of the White Book but we decided to adopt and develop the idea and in the second year that is in 2014 we launched Corporate Social Responsibility Awards in order to encourage national institutions and to increase awareness of social responsibility towards environment or society.

“Today too we have a weekly supplement on CSR published with Al Sharq daily. It is published every Sunday.”

Al Harami urged the corporate world to participate in CSR and provide details of their participation in the form of reports either through the White Book or weekly supplements.

H E Sheikh Abdullah bin Saoud Al Thani Governor QCB said discussions at the conference on CSR would help enhance companies and institutions’ role in CSR in the days to come. To a question about the role of local companies in CSR this year he said that depends on the overall economy and its growth. During panel discussions on the issue of CSR participants said it was important that individuals realise its importance rather than companies and institutions.
