ANKARA 20th December 2015 (WAM) -- Turkey last night announced its decision to withdraw its troops from Iraq following a response to a request by US President Barack Obama.

A statement released by the Turkish Foreign Ministry said that Turkey acknowledged the existence of what it called a "misunderstanding" with Iraq in respect to the proliferation of forces in Bashiqa military base in northern Iraq.

The ministry added that Turkey will continue to move some of its troops from Nineveh province where the military base is located.

Obama and the Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on Friday called for the withdrawal of Turkish troops from Iraq. Turkey deployed hundreds of soldiers in Bashiqa in early December saying that it comes within the framework of an international mission to train and equip Iraqi forces for fighting Daesh.
