Oman- Indian women deserted by spouse can seek help at embassy

Oman is among the 13 countries where the Indian government is providing legal and financial assistance to its women nationals who have been deserted by their overseas Indian spouses.

The assistance is provided through its missions. Sushma Swaraj Minister for External Affairs and Overseas Indian Affairs spoke about the scheme in reply to a question in Indian Parliament recently. As per information made available by Indian missions in the 13 countries 75 women have benefitted from this scheme from 2012 to December 15 2015.

Under the scheme assistance of up to US$3000 per case is given in developed countries and US$2000 per case in developing countries stated a release by India's Press Information Bureau. This assistance is provided through embassies' empanelled legal counsel/women's organisations/NGOs or Indian community associations.

The other countries on the list are the US UK Canada Australia New Zealand Malaysia Kuwait Bahrain Iraq Qatar Saudi Arabia and UAE. Scheme details are available on www.moia.gov.in.
