UAE- 'Close the gap between education and industry'

It is time to bridge the gap between education and labour market in the UAE said Hani Al Hamli Secretary-General of Dubai Economic Council (DEC). He was speaking to Dr Eesa Mohammed Bastaki president of the University of Dubai and Judge Shamlan Al Sawalhi at DIFC Courts.

"The localisation of innovation in Dubai economy starts by building a scientific base through strengthening educational institutions and research centres. This also involves preparing national cadres who possess modern knowledge tools to adapt and serve development goals. There should also be adequate policy making and system of incentives for R&D that will provide an atmosphere to attract talent especially in emerging areas" Al Hamli added.

The DEC Secretary-General praised the University of Dubai especially in terms of its strategy to support the UAE government initiative of reintegration of citizens through human resource development programmes in the public and private sectors.

Dr Bastaki presented a brief about the university's strategic plans. He said it is moving forward by partnering with local and international companies to develop and support research on IT in Dubai.

He stressed the importance of research in various fields especially new technology describing it as the main engine of nations' development and the best way to build a knowledge-based economy.

Dr Bastaki praised the role played by the DEC as a thinktank that aims to restructure Dubai's economic agenda through its critical initiatives and policy recommendations to the government. He also spoke of the need to establish a long-term partnership between the University of Dubai and DEC especially with regard to economic policy research.
