UK welcomes UNSC's resolution on Syria

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) LONDON Dec 19 (KUNA) -- Foreign Secretary Philip Hammond has welcomed the UN Security Council's resolution on a Syria peace plan calling it a "great step forward".In a press statement hammond said Syria has for too long been the world's biggest humanitarian and security crisis.The international community has now come together to work to end the bloody civil war in Syria and has paved the way for talks amongst the Syrian parties that will see a transition away from the murderous regime of Assad he noted."This resolution gives us a timetable and a clear way forward. Of course there are many challenges ahead but the world has taken a great step forward to resolving the Syrian crisis" he added.The United Nations Security Council has unanimously adopted a draft resolution endorsing a peace process for Syria.The resolution adopted by the 15-member council calls for an immediate ceasefire and looks to set a timeline for talks between the current government and opposition parties to establish a unity government as well as the guarantee of future elections.(end) mrn.tg
