UAE- SEHA Conference discusses more research papers on healthcare outcomes

ABU DHABI 17th December 2015 (WAM) -- Activities of the 6th Annual SEHA Research Conference-2015 organised by the Abu Dhabi Health Services Company SEHA continued for the second day yesterday with participation of world specialists from the USA Europe and the UAE.
The second day of the conference witnessed several sessions the first of which was moderated by Dr. Ali Abdulkareem Al Obaidli Executive Director of Academic Affairs at SEHA. The speaker was Dr. Marty A. Makary Chief of Islet Transplantation Surgery Professor of Health Policy and Management at Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. He reviewed innovated research ideas especially in the field of clinical services. He focused on creativity and innovation and the importance of the adoption of such methods in all areas of the health sector to ensure improvement and benefits to both patients and healthcare providers.
The second session was moderated by Dr. Maher Al Hems Director of Medical Education at SEHA. During the session Dr Gregory Raglow. Director of Clinical Information Department at SEHA reviewed "Malaffi" or "My File" programme the medical electronic record-keeping system applied in the facilities of SEHA. He also shed light on success stories that aim to improve the services and reduce costs.
The third session was moderated by Dr. Mustafa Al Muaini Acting Medical Director of Mafraq Hospital affiliated to SEHA. Professor Panos Kanavos Associate Professor in International Health Policy Department Director of Social Policy Programme Medical Technologies Deputy Director of LSE Health in London reviewed research on how to deal with modern technology financially and economically to achieve the utmost benefit in health sectors.
The second day of the conference also featured several workshops including one which addressed the opportunity to launch an electronic records system of chronic diseases in the UAE. It highlighted the importance of strengthening research at all clinical levels and the financial cost. Additionally it discussed the possibility of establishing a national record of diseases especially chronic ones and identifying the opportunities for the prevention of diseases. The ethical aspects of medical research especially with regard to the science of genetics both socially and morally were also reviewed too. The session was attended by Dr Ali Meshal Advisory Diabetes and Endocrine.
There was also a workshop addressing the comparative effectiveness of pragmatic clinical trials. It was moderated by Dr. Mohammed Saqr Deputy Director of Research Center of King Fahd Specialty Hospital in Dammam city Saudi Arabia and the speaker was Dr. Ali Rajab Director of Public Health Research Center of the New York University in Abu Dhabi.
Another workshop was held with the participation of a number of young Emirati researchers to be trained on the medical research protocols. This will enable them to carry out research about health services according to the highest academic standards in order to be eligible for publication in prestigious scientific journals. It was moderated by Dr. Abdul Rahman Al Hassawi Deputy Director of Planning and Training at Health Authority in the Eastern Region of Saudi Arabia and the speakers were Prof. Fikri Abu-Zidan Professor of Surgery at the Department of Surgery College of Medicine and Health Sciences UAE University and Dr. Heitham Hassoun Associate Professor of Surgery Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine Medical Director Global Services.
There was a special session on the expertise of Johns Hopkins in the field of medical research. It was moderated by Dr. Martha Zeiger and Dr Ali Al Obaidli and the speakers were Prof. Jodi B. Segal Professor of Medicine at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine Dr. Marty A. Makary and Dr. Heitham Hassoun Associate Professor of Surgery Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine Medical Director Global Services Johns Hopkins Medicine International.
One more workshop addressed the possibility of setting up outcomes research centres and reduction of healthcare costs. The speakers were Dr. Jodi B. Segal Dr. Marty A. Makary and Dr. Heitham Hassoun. The moderators were Prof. Martha Zeiger and Dr Ali Al Obaidli The last session addressed adaptation of the available budget according to the national goals. It was moderated by Dr. Ali Obaidali and attended by representatives of Abu Dhabi Educational Council ADEC insurance companies pharmacies and others. The speakers were Dr. Martina Newel Director of Research at ADEC Dr. Saif Jaibeji and Mariyam Zalzalah.
One of the research papers discussed during the conference a research on the relations between smoking infectious germs and tooth decay in smokers. The research was presented by Dr. Fa'eq Miqdadi a Dental Specialist at Marfa'a Hospital affiliated to SEHA. It is the result of a study conducted on 120 patients at the dental section of the hospital. It used special detection devices to note the presence of nicotine as well as presence of germs in the research sample. The study proved that the smokers who are infected with such germs are vulnerable to high rates of tooth decay.
Al Marfa'a Hospital also presented research on patient safety prepared by Ibrahim Rababah Nursing Director at the hospital. The research showed that 75 to 99 percent of the participants expressed their belief that the issue of patient safety in hospital is given special attention and care by the hospital administration which is keen on working as a team. It is also eager to provide a continuous education and training for the staff they said. The study showed that 50 to 75 percent of respondents believe that Marfa'a Hospital motivates its staff to exert maximum efforts to provide better services for patients in spite of the limited number of employees compared to the number of patients visiting the hospital.
