Qatar- National fervour peaks as day draws closer

doha: The roar of warplane engines preparing for National Day aerobatics is competing with soaring fervour on the ground as people look for ways to join in the celebrations. Not an outlet in Doha can be seen without the National Flag as almost every other building is clothed in maroon and white.

The patriotic spirit building over weeks has spiked to a crescendo three days ahead of December 18. Mobile cameras clicked and people stood in their tracks as a helicopter flew with the Emir’s portrait on a flag last week. Emir H H Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani was seen sporting national colours at a summit in Riyadh recently.

Layan all of 18 months will join the festivities with her parents by visiting one of the sites — there are several teeming with events — in Doha where celebrations are taking place.

“As parents we make sure that our daughter also takes part in the National Day as we dress her in the colours of the flag and visit celebration sites says Maryam Al Kuwari. The legal counsel at Qatar Petroleum feels “a great sense of pride and gratitude sweep over us” as the Qatar National Day draws near every year. So does Hayam Said Okby a teacher at Al Quds Model School in Doha. “I love Qatar and wish for its advancement” she says. In a throwback to the old days Al Quds Model School is displaying a village with different areas of Doha.

Al Kuwari believes in bequeathing patriotism to the next generation. “We pass on our pride so it will become rooted from a tender age” says the lawyer who studied at Cardiff in Wales.

From National Day cakes to masks and bags to badges bespoke merchandise is at its creative best making children and adults alike soak in the spirit of the occasion. Khalid Hany Awad a fifth-grader at Al Muntazah Model Independent School is looking forward to the celebrations for which he has been practicing. The school is putting up an exhibition. “I enjoy the festivities” says the 11-year-old.

Hany Anwar Awad a teacher at Ahmed bin Hanbal Independent Secondary School for Boys would like to congratulate the country’s leadership on the occasion. “I hope the country continues to achieve what makes it a great country” he says.
