Maersk Oil Qatar joins National Day celebrations

(MENAFNEditorial) Maersk Oil Qatar has thrown its support behind Qatar's National Day by spreading road safety awareness at the annual celebrations at Darb El Saai. Thousands of students and young adults are expected to learn about positive road behaviours by internationally-accredited defensive driving instructors during the two-week event.

Students for Road Safety is owned by Maersk Oil Qatar and the Traffic Department, within the Ministry of Interior, as part of the national One Second road safety brand. The programme aims to transform 12 to 18 year old students into road safety ambassadors through interactive presentations and training in a state of the art simulator, which is stationed at the Taffic Village at Darb El Saai for the National Day celebrations.

The Director of Qatar's Traffic Department, Brigadier Mohammed Saad Al Kharji, said: "National Day celebrations at Darb El Saai are one of our biggest events of the year, with thousands of students and their families passing through the Traffic Village. Maersk Oil Qatar's participation once again highlights its commitment to improving awareness of positive road behaviours in our country. By working together I'm confident we can make Qatar's roads far safer."

The driving simulator used in the Students for Road Safety programme features cutting-edge technology, including a full real car cockpit, and an advanced display system with a wrap around screen. A custom-made traffic artificial intelligence engine reflects common behaviours on Qatar's roads like tail-gating, failure to indicate, flashing lights and cutting across cars at roundabouts. Students participating in the simulator training session receive a comprehensive results report that analyses their driving behaviors.

Sheikh Faisal bin Fahad Al-Thani, Deputy Managing Director of Maersk Oil Qatar, said: "National Day celebrations are a time for us all to celebrate the achievement of the State of Qatar and the fantastic work that bodies like the Traffic Department and Students for Road Safety are doing to overcome challenges. At Maersk, we are committed to Qatar for generations to come through meaningful social investment programmes like Students for Road Safety. I urge everyone in Qatar to visit the Traffic Village at Darb El Saai to celebrate Qatar's great strides and further raise awareness about road safety."

Students for Road Safety is just one of many programmes Maersk Oil Qatar supports to improve road safety. Recently, Maersk Oil Qatar sponsored the 24th International Traffic Medicine Congress, held in Doha, to assist the country achieve the National Traffic Medicine Strategy Goal 2013-2022. This followed a Maersk Oil Qatar sponsored a knowledge sharing visit to the Swedish Vision Zero authorities in 2014 and a PowerTalk road safety event in Qatar this year with key stakeholders in Qatar.
