Turkey: Death toll in Izmir alcohol poisoning touches 11


(MENAFN- The Journal Of Turkish Weekly) One more person has died of alcohol poisoning in western Izmir province bringing the death toll to 11 since Nov. 23.

Mehmet Fatih Hindioglu 58 died at the intensive care of Katip Celebi University's Ataturk Training and Research Hospital Sunday.

The alcohol poisoning case was first reported in Turkey's Aegean coast on Nov. 23. Among the casualties were Haluk Uluturk 50 Alempenah Candar 63 Omer Akgun Yungevis 59 Ozkan Yaman 49 Koksal Cetin Birol Bacakli 45 Secgin Dengiz 49 Cesur Artun 53 Gurkan Tapinc 54 and Hasan Kutlu 55.

Turkish police have detained at least 19 people involved in the case and arrested six others for selling illicit alcohol.

Since Oct. 18 almost 100 people have been hospitalized for suspected alcohol poisoning in Istanbul.

Health authorities in the province said that 26 people had died from illegally-brewed alcohol.
