US congratulates S. Arabia on historic milestone election

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) WASHINGTON Dec 14 (KUNA) -- The United States congratulated Saudi Arabia on its "historic milestone" when it conducted its first municipal election in which both men and women registered as candidates and voted.In a statement late Sunday US State Department Spokesperson John Kirby added "the participation of women represents an important step forward in Saudi Arabia toward a more inclusive electoral process ..." "We congratulate the many men and women across the country who won seats and applaud the nearly 1000 women who ran and participated as candidates and we welcome this historic milestone" he concluded.Saudi Women won 15 seats in the various governorates in the first election where they are allowed not only to vote but to participate as candidates.
