Obesity 'epidemic' under focus at conference


(MENAFN- Arab News) RIYADH: The third Gulf Obesity and Metabolic Surgery Society Meeting (GOSS 2015) will open today with participants focusing on ways to tackle growing levels in the Kingdom and the Gulf.
The event is being held in cooperation with the Saudi Laparoscopy Society and King Saud University in Riyadh. Abdullah Aldhyan head of the society and president of the conference's organizing committee said the event would include surgeons anesthesiologists nutritionists physical therapists and consultants on endocrine diseases and blood pressure.
The speakers will come from the United States Canada Europe Asia and Arab states. Guest speakers will include Subhash Kini from Mount Sinai Medical Center Alejandro Pino-Figueroa from MCPHS Boston and Barbara Smith from the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute in the United States.
Recently Health Minister Khalid Al-Falih called for concerted efforts to combat diabetes and obesity in the region. The minister made this recommendation while inaugurating the International Conference on Countering Diabesity in Gulf countries in Riyadh.
The prevalence of diabetes in the Gulf Cooperation Council ranges between 15 and 20 percent of the total population. The Kingdom currently occupies fifth place globally and third in the Gulf for obesity.
The minister noted that these diseases not only threaten human life but also state resources imposing a critical economic burden. According to reports the treatment for diabetes costs $500 billion globally a year which is expected to increase to $750 billion by 2030.
According to a survey around 31 out of every 100000 children in the Kingdom aged between 10 and 14 have been diagnosed with Type One Diabetes. The cost of treating patients amounts to $1333 per person per year. Of the Ministry of Health's budget of $29 billion $10 million or 34 percent was spent on the treatment of diabetes.
The ministry plans to set up five centers for obesity treatment in four major cities in the Kingdom. Two such centers are being planned in the capital and one each in Jeddah Dammam and Asir.
