The Ras Al Khaimah Transport (RAK) Authority has launched an all-new taxi service for people with special needs. The authority will provide a more convenient shuttle service to this important segment of the society according to a senior official.

Yusuf Ismail deputy chairman of the authority told Khaleej Times that the taxis provided for special needs passengers have been amended to help commuters board and disembark with ease.

"It is actually a mini-bus rather than a saloon car but fitted with a special machine or jack to lift up and down the passenger in a comfortable way."

The passenger does not need to get off his or her wheel chair he added. "That makes things easier for the passengers that they can go out anywhere and anytime with no hassle."

The new service will be an advantage for the elderly patients and people with special needs Ismail said. "The special needs taxi has been launched on a trial basis but will be increased as per demand."

The tariff of this special taxi is the same as that of regular taxis he said. "The service can be availed within the emirate at toll free (8001700)."

Ismail said they have also launched an intercity public transport. "All our air-conditioned buses are spacious and equipped with luxurious seats." All bus trips start from RAK's Al Hamra area to the emirates of Umm Al Quwain Ajman and Dubai he added. "We are planning to extend our transport service to Al Ain Abu Dhabi and Fujairah."

Daily trips start from 7am and end at 9pm all week round including weekends and holidays. "The set frequency time for our intercity bus trips is one hour " Ismail said.
