Kuwait supports GCC's calls to intensify efforts to combat terrorism

RIYADH Dec 10 (KUNA) -- Deputy Foreign Minister Khaled Al-Jarallah said on Thursday that the Supreme Council of the Gulf Cooperation Council discussed at its 36th summit held in Riyadh a number of political issues notably the fight against terrorism the situation in Syria Yemen Iraq Libya the Palestinian cause and peace process.
Al-Jarallah said in a statement to Kuwait News Agency (KUNA) on the sidelines of the GCC summit meeting that the GCC with its special strategies on combating terrorism calls for intensifying and stimulating efforts in this regard as a matter of urgency to address these challenges.
He said that the Supreme Council stressed the need to continue and intensify regional and international efforts to combat terrorism "because it is not limited to the region but has spread to countries around the world" noting that the issue of terrorism topped priorities of the meeting of leaders of the GCC countries.
On the situation in Syria Al-Jarallah said that the leaders discussed this issue in all its dimensions and implications as well as its threats against the region international peace and security noting that the GCC countries "had previously warned of the danger of the tragic situation in Syria and everyone understands the dimensions of this situation and its repercussions".
He explained that the situation in Syria remains a "pressing issue" for the Gulf Cooperation Council calling for an end to the tragedy experienced by the Syrian people.
He stressed conviction of the GCC countries that the conflict in Syria "can not be resolved through military action but through a political solution" urging for moving ahead in this direction by the international community and the Security Council to quickly put an end to the tragedy in Syria.
He said that Saudi Arabia's hosting of the meeting of the Syrian opposition which began last Tuesday through noble efforts of the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Salman bin Abdulaziz was a positive initiative that will contribute to the formulation of the opposition parties' stances and acts as a prelude to any political move in the future that would include negotiations with the Syrian regime expressing hope this meeting would yield positive results.
On the situation in Yemen Al-Jarallah said that the position of the Gulf Cooperation Council is focused on trying to restore legitimacy and seek to preserve the unity of Yemen its security and stability in accordance with the fundamentals of the GCC's initiative and its executive mechanism.
On the situation in Libya Al-Jarallah said the GCC summit discussed the efforts aimed at reaching a comprehensive settlement leading to the preservance of security and stability in Libya referring to the GCC countries' supportive stance in this regard.
On the Palestinian issue and the peace process Al-Jarallah said that the peace process remains "stalled" stressing that the Gulf Cooperation Council will work on urging the international community to push the peace process forward after prolonged hiatus.(end) jy.fs.tg
