Morocco Access Students Excel at English and Civic Participation

(MENAFN- Morocco World News) Graduates of the Access Micro-Scholarship Program shared a night of drama, poetry, music and public speaking with their loved ones at The Access Graduation Ceremony and Project Citizen Showcase at the end of last month.

Organized by the Moroccan Center for Civic Education, the event recognized the students' two years of hard work and commitment in the scholarship program. The night focused on Project Citizen, a curriculum that helps students improve their English and engages them in public policy issues. The course places an emphasis on universal democratic values, history and culture, giving students the opportunity to develop an action plan around an issue area of interest to them.

Established in Morocco in 2003 and active in over 90 countries around the world, the Access Micro-Scholarship program was created by the U.S. Department of State to provide two years of supplemental English classes to students who might not be able to afford them otherwise. Participation in the program is competitive and is offered to select 13 to 20 year olds.

The program was launched in Morocco after the May 2003 bombings in Casablanca. As a further step, the MCCE is planning to use Access to promote employability and global citizenship education and to reach people with disabilities.
