UAE- GCC chalks out strategy to counter terrorism

A UAE delegation led by His Highness Shaikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai will leave for Riyadh today to attend a two-day Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) summit.

A strategy to counter terrorism will be on top of the agenda for the 36th summit which will begin today under the patronage of the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Salman bin Abdulaziz of Saudi Arabia.

The Yemeni dossier Syrian crisis and Iran's meddling oil prices economic cooperation and a mechanism to implement value added tax will be the other key topics.

Riyadh is also hosting a meeting of the Syrian opposition factions near the venue of the summit.

The GCC leaders will discuss the Syrian crisis in the wake of the Russian intervention and Moscow's support for the Assad regime.

The member states are expected to support the Syrian opposition factions meeting and come out with an agreement before the upcoming talks in Vienna on December 12.

The GCC leaders will endorse decisions aimed at boosting the security and military integration among the member countries.

The Yemeni issue is one of the paramount issues as Saudi Arabia is leading an Arab coalition that

GCC summit to discuss ways to fight terrorism supports the legitimacy in Yemen and striking the positions of the Houthi rebels and followers of the ousted former Yemeni president Ali Abdullah Saleh.

The summit is also expected to demand the international community to be resolute in implementing the guidelines of the UN Security Council lending credibility to the council's mission.

The GCC countries have reiterated their support to the efforts of UN Special Envoy for Yemen Ismail Ould Cheikh Ahmed ahead of a negotiation in Geneva on December 15.

They will also discuss Iran's attempts to sow dissent and incite sectarianism among the GCC citizens and damage their security and stability.

The Palestinian issue will also remain as a top issue in the wake of the latest humanitarian conditions in the occupied Jerusalem and Gaza Strip.
