To improve the safety and efficiency of the freight sector Department of Transport (DoT) in Abu Dhabi and the General Directorate of Abu Dhabi Police launched a new testing manual on Monday.

Over 60000 heavy vehicles undergo efficiency tests every year in Abu Dhabi.

A new manual has become an imperative as four out of 10 heavy vehicles have reportedly failed to get through even their first test.

During a Press conference held at DoT headquarters the speakers discussed the aim of the Heavy Vehicle Inspection Manual which is to provide a clear set of minimum standards for operators to ensure their vehicles maintain the required conditions to pass the annual test from the first time.

The manual will also improve the consistency of testing and lead to an overall increase in the number of safe heavy vehicles driving on Abu Dhabi roads.

Ahmed Al Hammadi the Acting Director of the DoT Freight Division believes that the manual will improve safety on roads.

"Today marks an important step in our tireless quest to improve the safety fairness and efficiency of the road freight industry in Abu Dhabi. Real change is here today with safety faults being identified and rectified as we speak at Heavy Vehicle Annual Test stations in Abu Dhabi" he noted.

In Abu Dhabi the annual testing of heavy vehicles is a requirement under the UAE Federal Law (21) of year 1995 regarding traffic in the emirate. A heavy vehicle must pass the annual test in order to be re-registered by Abu Dhabi Police.

Brigadier Ibrahim Nasser Mohammed Al Shamesi Deputy Head of Vehicles and Drivers Licensing Department at Abu Dhabi Police said: "We are delighted to be working in partnership with the DoT to increase the safety and security levels in heavy vehicles across Abu Dhabi. Moreover this close collaboration will support our law enforcement endeavours."

The manual is available online (www.freight2030.ae) and hard copies will be available at DoT Customer Care Centres and the Police Heavy Vehicle Test Stations soon.-
