Winners of Ali Mehdi Young Writers' Competition awarded

Nine youngsters were awarded for their outstanding talent in creative writing in English at the second Ali Mehdi Young Writers' Competition.

The awards ceremony took place under the auspices of H H Sayyid Faisal bin Turki al Said at the Cultural Club in Qurm on Monday.

The competition in three categories - poetry essay and short story writing - had attracted more than 100 entries organisers said.

Speaking at the event Sayyid Faisal said 'Poetry is expression of the heart. I am happy that this competition provides an opportunity for young people in Oman to express their passions and outlook on life.'

He added 'The competition has attracted young talent from all over the sultanate who have come forward to express themselves.'

Some of the participants recited poems at the event on subjects like death pain love loss and Nature.

One of the winners Mahnoor Anees Khan said 'I've been writing since I was 13. I write mostly on human emotions...war and the pain the world is going through....I study English literature at Majan College and William Shakespeare is my favourite. I finished his collection when I was 12. My short story for the competition was named Being that Girl. It's a fictional narrative that deals with separation from a brother loneliness and love.'

Khalid al Haribi a member of the organising committee said 'The competition aims to promote and encourage gifted young writers to celebrate their talent. It gives them a valuable opportunity to present their literary work to a wider audience.'

This year's judging panel included Professor Adrain Roscoe Dr Susanne Shunnaq Dr Faryal Ahmed Dr Adil al Khafaji and Dr Chandrika Balasubramanian.

The annual competition is held in memory of the late Ali Mehdi who was an ardent blogger writer and poet.

The Winners

Poetry: Zahra al Abri Rana al Sariri Abir al Busaidi.

Essay: Ashwaq al Maskery Dvita Kapadia Meryem Andulhamid.

Short story: Mahnoor Anees Khan Houriya al Balushi Dvita Kapadia.
