(MENAFN- Jordan News Agency) Paris Dec. 8 (Petra)-- Jordan has pledged it would cut its greenhouse gas emissions by 14 percent by 2030 besides doubling the proportion of the renewable energy in the total energy mix by 2020.
Environment Minister Taher Shakhsir said at the opening of the High-Level Segment of the Global Conference on Climate Change in Paris " we share same air oceans and water resources however the deforestation rates that have increased the collapse of the Caribbean coral reef system the melting of ice in the polar regions and the climate change everywhere will impact every living creature on the planet".
He pointed out to the impacts of the environmental conditions change on Jordan explaining that the Kingdom is going through various challenges as the Middle East is racked by disputes and civil wars.
"The region's conditions make it very difficult to focus on the protection of the environment and ecosystems in this region" the minister said while indicating that Jordan is a medium-income country with a distinct lack of natural resources and one of four poorest countries in the world in terms of water resources.
Meanwhile Jordan hosts and provides shelter and safety for 1.5 million Syrian refugees which aggravates the water crisis besides a rising demand by 5.5 percent for energy resources Shakhsir added.
The conference which runs until December 11 is expected to result in a legally binding agreement for all countries to address climate change and reduce emissions to keep global temperature within two degrees Celsius above pre-industrial revolution levels.
