US special envoy to attend Saudi conference on Syria

(MENAFN- The Journal Of Turkish Weekly) The American Special Envoy to Syria will be present at a conference aimed at producing a unified front for Syrian rebels on the eve of peace talks with the Syrian government the U.S. said Monday.

"Our special envoy Michael Ratney will be in Riyadh during the timeframe but I'd let the Saudis speak to specifics" said State Department spokesman John Kirby referring to the envoy’s possible participation. "We've made very clear that we wanted this first meeting to be as inclusive as possible."

Kirby said the conference in Riyadh on Tuesday was the beginning of a process to try to get the opposition unified "around a set of common principles".

He added that Jordan is also working on a better description "of who is or who is not" going to be considered a terrorist group in Syria.

The two-day meeting will help the opposition groups choose representatives for further peace talks with the Syrian government according to the Arab League.

Syrian opposition groups are expected to begin to prepare for political discussions with the regime of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad early next year according to Kirby.
