Kuwait- US welcomes all party talks on Yemen urges ceasefire


(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) WASHINGTON Dec 7 (KUNA) -- The US Monday said it "welcomes" the UN's announcement on Yemeni all-party talks in Switzerland taking place December 15 and urged a ceasefire in the war-torn country currently under air assault by a Saudi-led coalition since March.The coalition made up of Gulf countries intends to keep President Abd Rabbu Mansur Hadi in power and push back against the Shia Houthi rebels."The crisis in Yemen must be solved through peaceful political means and we've said this many times before. We urge all parties to attend the talks in good faith and without preconditions. It is critical that parties return to the negotiating table as soon as possible to end the fighting and agree on a path forward that will end the suffering of the Yemeni people" State Department Spokesperson John Kirby told reporters."We support the special envoy's call that the start of talks be accompanied by a cease-fire in order to bring immediate relief to the Yemeni people and we continue to urge all parties to exercise restraint take all feasible precautions to reduce the risk of harm to civilians and to comply with their obligations under an international humanitarian law including with respect to protecting medical personnel facilities and differentiating between civilian objects and military objectives" he added."We remain deeply concerned about the humanitarian situation in Yemen. We continue to urge all parties to allow for the unimpeded entry and delivery of critically needed relief items to the civilian population nationwide to include food medicine and fuel" he said.
