Turkey- Anti Boko Haram operation leaves 3 Nigerian troops dead


(MENAFN- The Journal Of Turkish Weekly) At least three Nigerian soldiers were killed and three others were injured in a military operation in the country’s northeast Borno state Sunday the military said.

According to a statement issued by army spokesman Sani Usman late Sunday several Boko Haram militants were also killed while a few others were also captured and were being interrogated.

"Various units of the army have advanced deep into the [Sambisa] forest clearing most of the camps therein rescuing persons held captive arresting some terrorists and destroying most of their weapons and equipment" the statement said.

"Advancing troops of the Nigerian Army supported by the Nigerian Air Force were able to clear and destroy Boko Haram terrorists camps at Shuari Adembe Yerimari Kura Yerimari Gana Gonin Kurmi Kore Mainya Kore and Lopere. Additionally the multi-barrel rocket launcher regiment has destroyed terrorist camps at Dure Dure Kore Jokwa as well as several other camps" it added.

The army spokesman said that the rescued people included women and children. Also troops recovered 2000 cows believed to have been stolen from people by the militants. Tunnels believed to be dug by militants were also discovered he added.

President Muhammadu Buhari has given the Nigerian military until December to eliminate Boko Haram.

Boko Haram which now constitutes a major security concern for Nigeria and its neighbors has waged a violent insurgency in the region since 2009. Recently militants have increased suicide bombings on soft targets across the Lake Chad region claiming thousands of lives and rendering several others incapacitated.
