(MENAFN- The Journal Of Turkish Weekly) At least 20 protesters have been detained by riot police in central Athens when demonstrations on the death anniversary of a teenage protester turned violent Sunday.
Thousands of protesters attended a rally organised by students and representatives of communist parties as well as the People's Unity and ANTARSYA parties at around midday to commamorate the anniversary of the police shooting of 15-year-old Alexis Grigoropoulos seven years ago during a rally.
No major incidents were reported during the march that ended shortly before 5 pm; however thousands more filled central Syntagma Square later Sunday evening.
Tensions started to rise higher though when protesters started setting fires breaking shop windows and throwing petrol bombs. Police reacted to violence with teargas and detained 20. At least two individuals were arrested police sources told Anadolu Agency.
Police managed to prevent a fire some protesters tried to set in a supermarket. A kiosk was also saved from a possible fire by riot police.
About 6000 police officers were deployed in the Greek capital on Sunday.
Alexis Grigoropoulos was killed by police during a protest in 2008 and the 15-year-old's death had sparked days of violent riots and protests in Athens.
