US assures Greece of support in economic crisis

(MENAFN- The Journal Of Turkish Weekly) U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry has said his country wants Greece to emerge out of its economic crisis.

In remarks made after his meetings with Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipra and Greek Foreign Minister Nikos Kotzias in Athens on Friday Kerry said: “The United States wants to help Greece emerge from economic crisis”.

He assured Greece that if it continued on its path of bailout reforms the U.S. government would do everything to spread the word to American companies that Greece was open for business.

Kotzias recognized the U.S. assistance in the bailout negotiations. He said that Greek foreign policy supported a political solution in Syria that includes a democratic constitution and elections.

About Greece-Turkey relations Kerry said that both countries had diplomatic channels to discuss Aegean issues. “We must work together as NATO allies but also to meet international adjacency rules” he said.

Kotzias said: “Greece supports all efforts of the talks around the Cyprus conducted under the mediation efforts of the UN” adding that: “In the 21st century no member state of the EU and the UN should be under anachronistic regimes that include guarantees and foreign troops”.

A day before Kerry met with Greek Cypriot leader Anastasiades and the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus President Mustafa Akinci and found that tangible progress had been made in recent months in talks between the two sides.

Kerry also referred to the refugee crisis as a global problem and said that everyone should be part of the solution. He praised Greece’s efforts to help the refugees despite the economic crisis and went on to announce an additional €24 million ($26.22M) in support of the UN Refugee Agency’s programs.

About the civil war in Syria he said that the U.S. remained committed to accelerating the diplomatic initiative to a cease-fire and political transition of power.

“This will solve the refugee problem and bring security to the citizens of Syria and other countries” Kerry said.
