UK Starts First Syria Airstrikes

(MENAFN- Qatar News Agency) British jets started on Thursday first air strikes against ISIS hours after the MPs voted in favour of the UK action in Syria.

A British Ministry of Defense spokesman said that four Tornado jets took off from RAF Akrotiri, Cyprus, after the Parliament authorized the attack. The jets had returned from the "first offensive operation over Syria and have conducted strikes," the spokesman added.

The Royal Air Force (RAF) was already carrying out operations against ISIS in Iraq. The Ministry of Defense is expected to give more details about its attacks later on Thursday.

The MPs had "taken the right decision to keep the country safe," said British Prime Minister David Cameron following the vote. Earlier on Thursday, a total of 397 votes against 223 approved the UK Syria strikes, following a 10-hour debate in the British Parliament.
