Oman- Meet on tapping potential of mineral and mining sector opens

Aimed at tapping the undiscovered mineral deposits in the sultanate the Oman Minerals and Mining Exhibition and Conference began on Tuesday at the Oman International Exhibition Centre.

The three-day event will also be a platform to showcase investment opportunities in mineral development mining quarrying and exploration and operations.

Organised by OmanExpo and Autad Oman in cooperation with the Public Authority for Mining this is the first such event on minerals and mining.

More than 35 companies from various countries including Oman Iran South Africa India Bulgaria UAE are taking part Among the leading entit ies are Kunooz Oman Holding Port of Duqm Port of Salalah Sohar Port and Freezone WorleyParsons and Gol Gohar Mining and Industrial Company.

Dr Salim bin Hamad al Busaidi CEO of Ma'aden Projects said 'More than 300 active mining operations are currently active in Oman. From 1996 the production of non-metallic minerals has increased about eightfold. In 2013 exports of mineral products accounted for 33 per cent of Oman's total non-oilexports.

'The Oman Minerals and Mining Exhibition and Conference has definitely added value to the mining sector by emphasising by bringing together the local and international expertise and investors to discuss the development challenges and opportunities in the mining sector.'

The event was inaugurated by H E Eng Ahmed bin Hassan al Dheeb Undersecretary in the Ministry of Commerce andIndustry.
