Qatar- Ministers of Energy and Education Honor Winners of "Tarsheed 22"


(MENAFN- Qatar News Agency) HE the Minister of Economy and Industry Dr. Mohammed bin Saleh Al Sada and HE the Minister of Education and Higher Education Dr. Mohammed bin Abdul Wahed Al Hammadi honored during a ceremony last night the winners in the first phase of Tarsheed T22 Education Awareness Project (T22).

The Tarsheed 22 campaign is part of the National Program for Conservation and Energy Efficiency (Tarsheed), launched by Qatar General Electricity and Water Corporation (KAHRAMAA). The programs aims at raising awareness among Qatar's youth about the importance of energy conservation using the power of football, in cooperation with the Supreme Committee for Delivery and Legacy (SC).

The results of the first phase of the project were announced during the ceremony. The first phase of Tarsheed 22 was marked by a reduction of electricity consumption by 3 gigawatts per hour per year, and saved QR 750 thousand per year. The first phase of the program also contributed to reduce harmful carbon emissions by one thousand and 600 tons per year, where lighting and plumbing tools in schools were replaced with saving lamps and water-saving taps.

The honoring included awards for the football players who participated in providing awareness lectures for school students and supported the project, and awards for the best three schools that achieved the highest reduction in consumption ratio according to the meter reading and participated in the various project activities. The winning schools are: Al Wakra Independent Primary School for Girls in the First Place, Al Dhaayen Independent Primary School for Girls in the Second Place, and Simaisma Primary Independent School for Boys in the Third Place. An award was also given to the best coordinator in the schools participating the program, and another award to the best Tarsheed announcement at the level of school students.

Chairman of KAHRAMAA Eng. Issa bin Hilal Al Kuwari expressed delight for the results achieved in the first year of Tarsheed 22, and said that KAHRAMAA will work to enroll more schools in the coming years until 2022.

KAHRAMAA, with the help of its partners, will contribute to educate the new generation of the Qatari youth to change consuming habits of electricity and water in order to protect the precious natural resources of the state, Eng. Al Kuwari said.

He commented the cooperation between KAHRAMAA and the Supreme Committee for Delivery and Legacy which he said represents an important of the success of the national projects.

He thanked all actors involved in the project, which had a large impact on the achievement of the current results, and wished further outstanding results for the project in the upcoming years.

For his part, Secretary General of the Supreme Committee for Delivery and Legacy Hassan Al Thawadi said that Tarsheed 22 did not only contributed to the rationalization of electricity and water consumption in the participating schools, but also contributed to the change of concepts of Qatar's youth who are embracing now the concept of sustainability in various aspects of their lives.

The program reflected the great positive impact of football, which should be used to build a sustainable legacy for Qatar 2022 FIFA World Cup, he said.

Meanwhile, Manager of Conservation and Energy Efficiency in KAHRAMAA Eng. Abdulaziz Ahmad Al Hammadi said that the winning schools will be lit by solar energy by the end of 2016 as a further encouragement to schools to become a role model, and to reflect Qatar National Vision towards a more sustainable future and a healthy environment.

The first phase of Tarsheed 22 targeted primary school students between the ages of 6 and 12 years, in addition to employees, teachers and parents. The training materials focused on energy conservation and raising the efficiency of use. The first phase also included sports and activities that promote the culture of conservation in schools before being transferred to homes. The program will continue until 2022 by enrolling 22 new schools each year.
