Turkey- More than 30 killed by Ugandan rebels in eastern DRC


(MENAFN- The Journal Of Turkish Weekly) At least 30 people includinga UN peacekeeper were killed in an overnight raid by Ugandan rebels in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo a local NGO said Monday.

A Malawian soldier serving with the UN mission eight Congolese troopsand 14 militants diedin clashes on Sunday night according to Omar Kavota a coordinator with the Study Centre for the Promotion of Peace Democracy and Human Rights.

He told Anadolu Agency that fighters from the Allied Democratic Forces (ADF) also carried out an earlier attack in which seven civilians were killedwith machetes inEringeti a village55 kilometers (34 miles) from Beni.

The ADF a Ugandan rebel group based in eastern DRC also torched the village health center Kavota said.

The Congolese army backed by Malawian peacekeepers regained control of the village after fiercefighting.

The ADF comprises several groups opposed to Uganda’s President Yoweri Museveni They have been active in eastern DRC since 1995 and havebeen blamed for the killings of hundreds of civilians around Beni.
