Energy World wows visitors, young and old

(MENAFN- Gulf Times) Energy World € Qatar 2015 concluded on Saturday with more than 22,000 visitors participating in the 10-day interactive educational experience.

Held for the first time in the country and the MENA region, the event took visitors of all ages on an exciting journey into the world of science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM).

Visitors also had the chance to explore a lively mix of physical and digital exhibits, participate in workshops and learn from the science shows.

More than 5,000 students from 120 schools across the country also took part in STEM activities in a fun and innovative way.

"My favourite zone was the kinetic exercise floor because it helped me understand how much energy can be generated from movement," said Tamim al-Tamimi, a student at the English Modern School.

"When I grow up I want to be either an engineer or an architect, but after visiting 'Energy World € Qatar 2015' I found out that I have the characteristics of an engineer," he added.

Mashary al-Saie, a local parent visiting with his family, thought the event was only for children. However, she found herself joining some of the educational activities which she learned about STEM in a fun way.

"I discovered that I am a designer. I am very happy that I brought my family to this event, it allowed me to discover more about my children's interests and potential," she said. "We have also developed a new appreciation for energy and from now on we will make a conscious effort to conserve it."

Hissa al-Hajri, a local student, said she had no idea that it takes so much energy to produce food.

"For me energy was just fuel and electricity but now I understand the important role energy plays in our everyday lives," she noted.

Al-Hajri said her parents have always encouraged her to become a designer but her dream was to become an inventor.

However after visiting the exhibition, she was inspired and determined to pursue her dream of becoming an inventor.

Rob Sherwin, general manager, corporate affairs and deputy country chairman of Shell companies in Qatar, said 'Energy World Qatar' aims to encourage young people to study STEM subjects in higher education.

"We hope these young people were inspired to become the scientists, engineers, technologists, innovators and leaders of tomorrow," he added.

Long-term partners Qatar Petroleum and Qatar Shell, in association with the Qatar Tourism Authority and the Supreme Education Council, hosted the event.
