Lawyers of Turkish journalists object to court's arrest decision


(MENAFN- The Journal Of Turkish Weekly) The attorneys of two daily Cumhuriyet journalists have objected to acourt decision on Monday to remand them in custody over charges ofespionage and aiding an armed group.

On Thursday two prominent journalists Can Dundar editor-in-chief of newspaper Cumhuriyet and itsAnkara bureau chief Erdem Gul werearrested because the dailypublished photographs and video footage purportedly showing trucks belonging to the Turkish intelligence service MIT.

The two attorneysoffered their petition to theIstanbul's 7th Penal Court of Peace.

"We are doing our partand objectto the arrest ruling which is against to the Turkey's constitution theEuropean Convention on Human Rights(ECHR) and theEuropean Court of Human Rights(ECtHR). The rest is up to you. The decision and responsibility are yours" the petition said.

In January 2014 several trucks were stopped by local gendarmerie officials in the southern Adana and Hatay provinces on the grounds that they were loaded with ammunition despite a national security law forbidding such a search.The case saw the arrests of 26 soldiers.

Turkey's Interior Ministry said at the time that the trucks which were reportedly carrying arms into northern Syria were in reality conveying humanitarian aid to the Turkmen community in the war-torn country.
