Militias Fighting Kills 19 in Somalia

(MENAFN- Qatar News Agency) At least 19 people were killed Saturday in fighting between rival militias in central Somalia, officials and residents said.

The fatalities in the town of Galkayo included some civilians. More than 25 people were reported to have been injured.

Fighting had already broken out earlier between militias from the federal states of Puntland and Galmudug, clashing over Galkayo, which lies on the border between them.

Thousands have fled the area.

The UN representative to Somalia, Nicholas Kay, condemned the fighting.

"Any shelling of civilian areas of the town may constitute war crimes or crimes against humanity," he said in a statement.
