Gibraltar re elects left leaning govt


(MENAFN- Arab News) MADRID: Voters on the disputed British colony of Gibraltar have re-elected Fabian Picardo's left-leaning coalition in parliamentary elections.
Results posted on the Gibraltar Parliament's website Friday showed Picardo's Gibraltar Socialist Labour Party and their Liberal partners won 10 seats in the 17-deputy chamber against seven for the Gibraltar Social Democrats led by Daniel Feetham. The election was held Thursday.
Picardo 43 was first voted in as chief minister in 2011. His government has concentrated on trying to improve health and education services and boost the local economy which is based on shipping financial services and tourism.
Gibraltar located on Spain's southern tip is a multicultural British outpost of 30000 people.
Spain ceded its sovereignty to Britain by treaty in 1713 but has persistently sought its return.
