Call to preserve Qatar's habitat in rainy season

(MENAFN- Gulf Times) The Ministry of Environment (MoE) urged all citizens and residents to preserve the Qatari environment, both land and sea, during the rainy season, the official Qatar News Agency reported yesterday.
The ministry called upon people who visit the Qatari desert and open areas not to enter such places with their vehicles and instead use only roads.
In a statement, the MoE said people should avoid crushing plants and shrubs with their cars and motorcycles so as not to cause damage to the environment and soil, which may threaten wildlife and have an adverse impact on natural beauty.
The ministry noted that entering such sensitive areas during rains affects the growth cycle of plants, shrubs and trees. It also leads to a levelling of the soil, thereby causing its destruction and desertification as well as the elimination of rare species of plants and trees.
The MoE also called upon farm owners to stop grazing during this season, warning that such activities might lead to the elimination of plants and shrubs.
Stressing the need to co-operate with the ministry to protect Qatar's environment during the rainy season, the MoE said public awareness about the protection and preservation of the environment would help enrich the country's wildlife.
The ministry also underlined the need to report any violation in the desert or open areas by contacting the environmental operation room at 998.
