Doha: Local businesses have shown their support behind a small team of Doha College Year 13 business students to help them produce a fantastic day of entertainment for their younger classmates.

Year 13 A Level Applied Business Studies students on November 22 hosted the Doha College Qatar International Day celebrations for over 800 secondary students.

With guidance from Head of Year 13 and Business Studies Teacher Michelle Gammon and other key staff the students successfully approached Qatar companies to provide sponsorship or products to help them deliver a special day-long event for their juniors. The event aimed to promote the different cultures found at Doha College and across Qatar.

Doha College Principal Dr Steffen Sommer said the local community had been extremely welcoming generous and supportive of the students and their event concept.

“I would like to thank the Qatar business community and other major sponsors for their extraordinary support for our Qatar International Day” Dr Sommer said.

“The experience of working with organisations has been invaluable to this group of students many of whom want to go into business for themselves in the future.

“The aim of the event was to help both the Year 13 and our secondary students learn about new cultures as well as plan and deliver a complex corporate event.”

Mercure Hotel was the Diamond sponsor providing essential funding for the event. Platinum sponsors Aspire Katara Hospitality arranged for cupcakes from Red Velvet Cupcakery and delicious food from Chapati & Karak and Albisana Shawarma stations with 100% of the takings from Chapati & Karak being given to the charity of the student’s choice.

Gold sponsors Aspire Zone gave students t-shirts to use to create a Qatar inspired theme and Q-Auto brought two of their latest cars plus merchandise giveaways for students and staff to view.

Mecure Hotel General Manager Thierry Szewc said he was pleased the hotel was able to support the school as a Diamond sponsor.

The students chose Qatar Japan Italy America UK and Egypt as their key countries arranging for origami lessons football in bubble balls and “mummy” wrapping competitions as part of the cultural led activities. Other nations and cultures were included in the quiz cupcake design event and the scavenger hunt.

Money raised from this cultural celebratory event is being donated to Hand in Hand Syria (www.handinhandforsyria.org.uk) a charity chosen by the Year 13 students.
